Latina Equal Pay Day. El dia en que the Latina woman finally catches up to the White man’s earnings of the previous year. Esperamos este dia, so we can continue the fight to end the Latino wage gap. Latina Equal Pay Day 2020, is on October 29. This means, que Latina women have had to work all of 2019 and up to October 29, 2020 to make as much as the White man has al final of 2019.
Women generally make less than men.
According to leanin.org, on average women make 18% menos que un hombre. Y eso solo es en general. No race included. This means that generally speaking, women already lose about $10,122 as a result of this gender pay gap.
This gap only gets worse, especially for women of color:
- Asian women make 10% less.
- White women make 21% less.
- Black women make 38% less.
- Native American women make 43% less.
- Latinas make 45% less.
This large gap means that en nuestra carrera completa, Latinas would lose $1,121,440 due to the wage gap. This is because this gap begins as early as Latinas begin to work, usually around the age of 16.
Pero somos mas educadas.
Women graduate college at a higher rate than men have been for decades. Pero un diploma no signifca dinero. The higher up on the education line you go, the wider the wage gap gets. Resulting in a Latina with a master’s or PhD degree making 28% less than a white male counterpart.
Y por cada 100 men who are promoted to managers, only 68 Latina women are promoted. This results in more Latinas getting stuck in entry-level positions.
And it doesn’t end there,
Even trabajando in the same jobs – Latinas still make less than men. Now, imagine a household in which the woman is the sole breadwinner, yet this is the case for more than half of Latino households. When this happens, there’s so many sacrifices that families have to make just to make ends meet and be able to put food on the table
This is also the cause for low generational wealth in BIPOC communities. The wage gap impacts a families’ ability to invest in savings, property and education.
Que puedo hacer?
- Sharing salary information is a great way to help end this gap.
By doing so, estas ayundando those who are in the same role as you know how much estas ganando. This is great for when it’s time for a raise or you’re negotiating salary at a potential new job.
- Support raising the minimum wage.
When most women empiezan a trabajar, they begin by earning minimum wage. By raising it, it would help end that initial gap y asegurarse that both men and women have a chance at earning the same in those entry-level jobs.
- Raise awareness for these issues.
Latina Equal Pay day is just es uno de muchos mas on the list. There’s Native Women’s equal pay day as well as Black women’s, for moms and AAPI women’s equal pay day.
